DIRECTV getting ready for HD broadcast though new satellite
DIRECTV, the nation's leading satellite television service provider is calling their subcribers to alert them to tune channel 499 to check and make sure they have the right equipment for the broadcasters high definition expansion. The screen on the channel will confirm the 'search of satellite' if the subscriber has a Ka/Ku dish, H2, HR20 a high definition receiver and a B-Band converter module attached to the receiver.
When DIRECT TV switches to MPEG-4 transmission system during September the subcribers will be all set to receive their new HD channels. This transmission will be delivered via the DIRECTV-10 satellite launched on 6th July.
DIRECTV customers who does not receive 'search for satellite' when they tune channel 499 will be alerted and would be asked to call DIRECTV for a system upgrade. Its not clear from DIRECTV if they will charge for the upgrade or not. Earlier DIRECT TV said that the upgrade would be free for the subscribers who go for a year or two programming commitment.
