North American Cable Equipment will offer an NAS MFH-1 SBCA

Certification Class Jan. 10 and 11 at its Las Vegas office during CES,

the company announced last week.

The course, intended to give installers an inside look at the latest

NAS satellite technology developments, will cover topics ranging from equipment specs, to signal calculations, to design types, to off air HD and UHF integration. Participants will also complete a hands-on set up project.

NAS systems offer the ability to distribute all five DirecTV orbital

slots, off air, CATV, and high speed Internet through one cable

connection. Certification in this technology will be required by

DIRECTV, NAS, and a number of equipment distributors starting in 2007.

NACE recommends that attendees have completed the SBCA Level 3

commercial class as well as the MFH1 prerequisites before signing up

for the $299 course.

DIRECTV, the European Space Agency (ESA), and Radiotelevisione Italiana (RAI) - all holders of key DVB-S2 intellectual property rights - together unveiled terms of a comprehensive licensing offering under their combined patent rights for the digital video broadcasting standardized technology.

According to the companies, the offering will set limits on cumulative royalties paid for the licensing of intellectual property rights in order to expedite the adoption of the DVB-S2 standard. DVB-S2 is the second generation DVB system for broadband satellite communications, covering digital TV and HDTV broadcasting, interactive services and professional links by satellite.

The three right-holding groups said they will jointly offer a license under their combined portfolios of intellectual property rights necessary for the implementation of DVB-S2. For consumer applications like set-top box receivers, a license will not exceed 50 cents per product in quantities exceeding 500,000 over the term of the license and not to exceed $1 per product in lower quantities.

Free-to-air and pay-TV broadcasters will not be required to pay a separate service license fee to broadcast to licensed receivers, the groups said. The per product royalties and the arrangements for broadcasters are geared to help launch DVB-S2 technology and follow the commitment of the rights holders to offer licenses on fair, reasonable and non-discriminatory terms.

New Original Program Will Feature Live Masses From the Basilica of the Sacred Heart on The University of Notre Dame Campus Every Sunday Starting December 17

Continuing the effort to bring more original, faith-based programming to television, DIRECTV, the nation’s leading satellite television service provider, will launch the new program Sunday Mass from Notre Dame to its channel 103 line-up starting Sunday, December 17 at 10 a.m. EST. Each Sunday, masses will be aired live from the Basilica of the Sacred Heart, on the campus of The University of Notre Dame.

Sunday Mass from Notre Dame will join an already well-established Channel 103 line-up alongside Songs of Praise for Christmas, a 90-minute musical celebration hosted by Amy Grant and Darrell Waltrip; Amy Grant’s concert special Time Again; and other original family-friendly programming.

As part of the Sunday Mass from Notre Dame series, DIRECTV will also feature a special live 75 minute midnight mass from Notre Dame on Christmas Day, which will re-air through out the day.

“This new initiative is yet another opportunity for Notre Dame to bring quality Catholic liturgies to individuals and families across the country and around the world,” added Rev. Richard V. Warner, C.S.C., director of Campus Ministry.

Masses at Notre Dame are marked by the full participation of their assembly in the liturgy, and on Sundays the Basilica is regularly filled to capacity. Sunday Mass from Notre Dame will allow DIRECTV customers to experience the University’s celebrated High Mass, complete with performances from the Liturgical Choir, under the direction of Gail Walton, during the academic year. During the summer months, the Basilica Collegium Choir, under the direction of Andrew McShane, will provide the summer liturgy music. A 5 p.m. Saturday Vigil Mass can also be seen every week on the Hallmark Channel, which is also carried on DIRECTV.

DIRECTV will employ architecturally sensitive camera placements inside the Basilica to capture the beauty of the church, while not disturbing the solemnity of Mass. Technical production of the Mass is accomplished locally through the services of Pentavision Communications Inc., which produces the show from a control room in the basement of the Basilica. WNDU-TV will send the broadcast via fiber optics to DIRECTV’s master control.

For the sports fans out there who always wanted to be on TV but never had the courage to streak across a live broadcast without any pants, the nation's largest satellite TV company might have come up with the solution you are looking for. In a challenge to sports fans everywhere, DIRECTV and IFILM, an online portal for video, are launching the first Sports Shorts Video Contest for armchair quarterbacks and other amateur videographers.

Running through Jan. 15, the contest is looking for the best game-time passion, play or bloopers clip to be submitted for a chance to win a grand prize trip to the Super Bowl in 2008 and have the video featured on both IFILM and DIRECTV.

The contest features three different categories in which contestants can compete for top honors: Most Memorable Sports Moment, Most Hilarious Sports Blooper, and Most Passionate Sports Fan. Each video can be up to seven minutes in length and will be open to viewer comment on DIRECTV.com and IFILM.com through Jan. 15. An independent panel will then choose first place winners in each category and a Grand Prize winner, which will be announced on Feb. 3, 2007.

Said DIRECTV SVP Karen Leever, "User generated content is very hot right now." Indeed - as long as entries don't contain any copyrighted footage or music, that is. Centroamerica TV Delivers Original Programming and Local Content from the Region's Highest-Rated Networks

DIRECTV is providing Central Americans in the U.S. an open window to their cultures and traditions via Centroamerica TV (CATV), a 24-hour Spanish-language network that is now available exclusively to DIRECTV's Spanish-language programming customers.

Featuring the best programming directly from El Salvador, Honduras, Guatemala, Costa Rica, Nicaragua and Panama, CATV is available on DIRECTV(R) viewer channel 428 at no extra charge to customers who subscribe to the SELECCION EXTRA(TM) and above programming packages.
